Annual Cup Predictions

V-Line:

Vanier Cup:

Laval 40 Western 14

Unfortunately, Laval is just to strong for the Mustangs and will win in a laugher. The Rouge et Or potent offense will score early and often, while the Western air attack will be stifled by the Quebecers. Watch for Laval QB Benoit Groulx to have a big game and show why he was the Uteck Bowl MVP. (Note for you anglos, the proper pronunciation of this name is "Ben-oyte Grow-lix"). The Mustangs fans had a disappointing showing at the Mitchell Bowl with fewer than 5000 in attendance, while Laval has rabid fans that will travel to the big game in big numbers. Even though Ivor Wynne is only about an hour or so away from London, my guess is that the Laval fans will be close to outnumbering the Mustang fans and will be much louder. Let's say about 13,000 in attendance.

Grey Cup:

Montreal 24 Calgary 21

The home team led by Anthony Calvillo and Ben Cahoon pulls out the win at the Big O in a close game between two evenly matched teams. Henry Burris will play well, but just fall short as the large pro-Als crowd is the "13th man". In 2001 the Als weren't in the game and they still had 65,000 people on hand. With the home team in the game and football fever taking over in the PQ, look for just under 70,000 to cram into Olympic Stadium, where it will be about 30C and while they won't run out, the Molson Ex will be warm by the third quarter.

Potential Hijinx:

- Hamiltoe proves to great fun, especially with tour guide Amor showing the Double Bubble attendees all the sights. Not everyone makes it back to the Daze Inn on Friday night, but all make it to the Vanier game.
- The trains, planes and automobile tour for the Double Bubble goes off with only one minor hitch - the airport security staff at Pearson is reluctant to allow Dirty Don to board until he proves his sobriety by reciting his "A-B-Cs" backwards. Dirty gets on the plane and we arrive safely.
- The Montreal club scene proves too much for Safety Kev to handle and he runs out of money at a particular establishment on rue Ste-Catherine and he has to take out a line of credit. Fortunately Big Fun Rick is on hand with the appropriate paperwork and a brief case full of 20s.
- Kenny G regrets not going on the Double Bubble and tries to make up for two games in one and puts on a stellar performance in Montreal on Saturday night. His breakdancing routine at the end of the night spells trouble the next day though as G has to watch the game with ice packs on both knees and his spine.
- Montreal proves it is a strong host, as all attendees have fun, practice their French ("oui, plusieurs shooters s'il vous plait"), admire the 'scenery', enjoy the game and sample fine cuising (smoked meat, poutine and Labatt 50 Light).

Don's Dirt:

Here we go...and I never thought about having to be sober to get on the plane. That is gonna be tough!!

Vanier

Laval 14 Western 3

A few stats to back up the prediction. Laval is 4-0 in their Vanier appearances and that ain't gonna change this weekend. During this run, they have never scored more than 14 points and have never given up more than 10. While some think it is going to be a high scoring affair, I think Western;s defence will play well but not well enough. Another interesting fact...this is the first time in Laval's five trips to the Vanier that they are playing a team other than the Huskies.

14 - 10 over St Mary's in 1999
14 - 7 over St Mary's in 2003
7 - 1 over Sask in 2004
13 - 8 over Sask in 2006

Grey Cup

Montreal 25 Calgary 21

Have to agree with Mr Brown on this one. Montreal, with the home fans will pull this one off. The only bold predicition here is that it will be more entertaining than last year's game at the Roger's Centre. I will probably be able to keep awake this year!

One word....Holy sh1t is this going to be a blast!!!

Hijinks

- BFR goes on a strict Montreal diet consisting solely of a lime and a stripper's belly. Now that is healthy eatin!!!
- IT's head swells and explodes after being surrounded by such beautiful filth. Makes a future fortune selling the cinematic result from the hotel room on the web "I'm Loney for you!"
- J-Rock....well insert your own story here...It'll come true. Can't wait to see the unveiling of this year's T-Shirt. Still trying to get Mrs. Dirty to get a prescription for Mikoc
- Mrs Garrett makes a return visit to Slainte's in Hamilton pining for her young buck Kenny-G

G-Spot

Agreed, it is all about the score

Shootout in Hamilton... Wouldn't be the first time

Vanier Cup Homeless for 2009

According to the Toronto Star, the Vanier Cup is now homeless for 2009.

Nobody stepped up and bid on the game.

Anyone think that is should be a double bubble for next year and partner with the Grey Cup in Calgary?

Kenny G's 4 sleeps newletter

Hi All,

we have taken a couple casualties in the attendance department. We have 3 extra tickets and would like to find someone for them ASAP. We do have the fallback of scalping them at the game but as we know from last year, Scalping is risky business ! We don't want J-rock looking like this and having to spend time with to the Surete de Quebec!

Check out last years pics on the website

Please put your thinking caps on to see if you have any buddies who can take the tickets.

Don't forget to gather your costume together..... Go Riders!

Match ups set

The match ups are now set for Grey Cup and Vanier Cup.

Calgary Stampeders vs. Montreal Alouettes

Laval Rouge et Or vs. Western Mustangs

Watch here for our fearless picks.

Bowl game picks

V-Line:

Laval wins at home by a score of 37-18. This one is never really close. Rouge et Or return to Vanier!

St. Mary's run game dominates at Western as the Mustangs can't get the air attack going. The Huskies come away with the hard fought 32-30 victory.

This sets up a rematch of a favourite of mine - the classic 7-1 game of 2004.

Don's Dirt:

Laval vs. Western in the Vanier.

G-Spot:

Laval 28-17

Western 31-28 in OT

CIS predictions this week

Don's Dirt:
Here are my picks for the weekend. It is Saturday morning so I haven't had
much of a chance to look at the match ups. Dyaln (4) and Matthew (6) are
also putting in their two cents (they had to rob the piggy bank)

Yates Cup
Ottawa 28 at Western 24

While I detest the GeeGees, the only reason I would be choosing them this
week is because I detest Western more!! Plus, it would be nice to get a
preview of the Vanier next week here in Ottawa when the OUA hosts the
Atlantic conference.

Dylan: Ottawa GeeGees
Matthew: Ottawa GeeGees

Hardy Cup
Simon Fraser 13 at Calgary, 31
There has been a lot of debate over this game being shown on the Score and
now not. Don't know much about the West this year. Matt Walter will run
wild and never bet against Blake Nil. Dinos in a walk.
Dylan: Calgary
Matthew: Calgary

Dunsmore Cup
Concorida 24 at Laval 21
Time for a change in the QIFC. I am pulling for the Stingers in this one.
Might not be a smart move here, but I would love Laval to have to watch the
last two weeks from home.
Dylan: Laval
Matthew: Laval

Jewett Trophy
St FX 34 at St Mary's 31
Remember that St. Mary's is the only team to be shut out in a Vanier Cup
game. (thanks Sask for scoring 1 in 2004). I think the year was 1992.
Haven't liked St.Mary's since when Alex Eliopoulos predicted a victory that
day. Go St FX!!!
Dylan: St FX
Matthew: St FX

Kenny G's 14 Sleeps Newsletter

G'Day All,

I hope you are all geared up for Grey Cup and for some of your the "double-bubble" or just single bubble with Vanier Cup. Regardless, start storing up in sleep. Don't forget to check out the playoff games this weekend.

Let's hope that Montreal wins so they can be the home team on Grey Cup weekend. This is a short letter just to plant the seed. Take a few moments this weekend and think about the theme for costumes for Grey Cup. As you may recall, last year's theme was "most Canadian". Some old guy won that one!

Think about what you think it should be this year and keep in mind the location... we will be accepting your suggestions now and will make a decision early next week.... I am leaning towards "French cuisine" w could have a Pepsi, Joe Louie, Poutine, someone in Labatt 50 costume (his name rhymes with Madam Frown), maple syrup bottle, and a smoked meat sandwich. Pay up your health insurance before the trip....

Speaking of hospitals, J-rock and Townie will be in charge of getting our tickets ; )
