Annual Vanier Cup Predictions

It's a tradition for us to come up with Vanier Cup predictions. Check out some from the past here, here and here.

Here are our predictions for 2009 with Queen's U (9-1) facing Calgary (9-2)!

The G-Spot

Queen's 28 Calgary 24
- I predict at least one of our Santas will be requested to leave the game. His name may or may not rhyme with Thirty Ron.
- Our tailgate cuisine and shooters will be a hit and we will make many new Quebexican freres.
- Loney will have success at least one of the nights.
- I predict we will have a minimum of 9 celeb sightings and be interviewed by local or national media.
- Jerred's red eye will be in major pain after 12 candy cane shooters and more then one of us will get slapped by women sitting on their laps

The V-Line

Calgary 20 Queen's 13
- Dirty's hopes are dashed as dropped balls don't help Danny "Laura" Brannagan the Queen's QB. Glavic, the former St. Mary's QB who defected to Calgary following coach Nill will scramble for at least one TD. Queen's defense will play well, but not as well as last week and a last minute touchdown will give Calgary their first win since 1995 - the first since the inaugral Vanier Cup Road Tour.
- First class on VIA is stellar, best Vanier transportation ever (except for the time Murray the limo driver got lost). At least one of us gets cut off before dessert on the way there.
- There will be one guy who doesn't read the 2 sleeps newsletter and will show up with a bad moustache, an old sweater, a ski-doo suit and a doctor's mask.
- Laval fans, still bitter about last week, will cheer up when the see a large group of Anglo "Pere Noels" giving away free shooters and candy canes.
- IT will use the expression "Ho Ho Ho"; however he will not be referring to Santa's favourite saying but instead describing his three 'dates' over the weekend.
- At least one guy will set their fake Santa beard on fire with a flaming shooter.
- Dr Dahle will win rookie of the year by default but will earn the title by offering free "exploratory" surgery to any Laval co-ed. (Note, not covered by Q-HIP).
- After this year, there will be at least one night club on the Grande Allee that will set a "no Santas" policy for the 2010 Vanier Cup.

Don's Dirt

Well obviously the best team in the country is the team that beat out the #1 team. Queen's will dominate on defense to give Blake Nill fits. I bet that the Calgary Dinos will wish they were back home watching the Coupe Grie when all is said and done. And after a defeat, they might just get home in time.

QUEENS'S 31
CALGARY 24

As for Hijinx

I think Dark Marcy may secure a position at a fine Quebec City mall as a Santa
Kent...Not so much. He will live up to Billy Bob Thornton
I have to say that Kent's predicition of Loney is BANG on
Skinny gets Jolly and must need some help to get out of the clink
Something tells me that Weir hits the outdoor pool avec Santa suit with Bittle (call me crazy)
And MMMM? Where did he get to?

2 sleeps and Santa Clauses are coming from Kenny G

G'Day,

It is just like Christmas....I could not sleep last night thinking about the Santa Claus theme, there is no way it can't be a hit. We can cook "Rudolph burgers and sausages", serve Candy Cane shooters/ drinks, and give out Candy Canes at our tailgate. If you are planning on doing some of these , you may want to bring the liqueurs with you as not sure if there is an SAQ close by or the depanneur would have some of them. Check out # 3 and 5 !

for example;

1- "Candy Cane" shooter

1/3 oz. Creme de Menthe - (more)
1/3 oz. Grenadine - (more)
1/3 oz. Peppermint Schnapps - (more)

layer in shooter glass or cocktail glass w ice

2. Candy Cane Shooter

1/2 oz Grenadine
1/2 oz Crème De Menthe
1/2 oz Peppermint Schnapps
Layer in that order in a Cordial or Shooter glass.
Note: Depending on the brand, some Creme De Menthe liqueurs come in clear or green colours as does the Peppermint Schnapps. Try and buy your liqueurs so that you have one ingredient as clear and one as green, so that you can get the full 'candy cane' stripe effect.

3. Devil's Candy-Cane recipe
1/2 oz Rumple Minze peppermint liqueur
1/2 oz Bacardi 151 rum
1 splash grenadine syrup

Mix ingredients together in a shot glass, carefully ignite and allow to burn, then extinguish and shoot.

4. Mrs. Santa Claus recipe

1/2 oz chilled Firewater cinnamon schnapps
1/2 oz chilled Tequila Rose strawberry cream liqueur

Pour the Firewater into a shot glass. Top with the Tequila Rose liqueur, and serve.

5. Flaming Christmas Bastard (Shooter)

1 oz Dekuyper Hot Damn 100 Proof Cinnamon Schnapps,
1 oz Green Creme de Menthe, Peppermint Schnapps

Layer the creme de menthe and the Hot Damn, top with the Peppermint Schnapps and light on fire. Blow out the flame, rub an ice cube over the rim of the glass and drink!!! ALWAYS USE CAUTION WITH FIRE.

Weather is looking potentially damp with wet snow or maybe some rain and 3 degrees so the extra layer of the Santa Suits may come in handy! Speaking of suits should be able to get them at Zellers, Sears, Walmart and other places like that. If you are stuck, Cody's in Ottawa sells and rents

3 sleeps email from Kenny G

OK here are the items of the day;

A- nothing conclusive has been decided through the democratic process with regard to the them ... the vote was split between the following so I would suggest choosing your preference... here are your choices;

oldest/ugliest 1-piece snowsuit
sweater/moustache combo
Dr. outfit
whatever Don is doing?

B- I have put the rooms in individual names for one person in each room so hopefully will speed up in check in... here are the assignments and confirmation numbers;

19942343 - Kenny G (and Slave)
19942344 - Jerred (Dave )
19942346 - Adam (DIRTY Don and BFR)
19942347 - Robin (and MMMMMMMmmmmmm)
19942348 - Kevin (Dark Marcy)
19942352 - Scott (Shawzy Shawze)
19942354 - Mike (paging Dr. Dahle)

C- Dinner... it appears by the delicious VIA 1 menu that dinner is part of the trip so if we need to eat further when we get in QC, we can get a game plan together. This place was suggested but I am going out on a limb and going to say we will be too messy to appreciate it

D- with regard to tailgate... I am doing some research tonight and will provide an update....

It's gonna be "DIRTY"

Well the opponents for the Vanier have been settled. U of Calgary Dinos defeated the St Mary's U Huskies to win the Uteck Bowl.

In the Mitchell Bowl, the Queen's U Gaels upset the U Laval Rouge et Or. Queen's hasn't been to the Vanier since 1992 when the won with the help of Dirty Don #35.

I'm thinking Dirty Don is going to be pretty excited for Vanier Cup this year!

Laval Tailgating videos

Check out these great Laval tailgating videos - it's going to be a good one.

8 sleeps newsletter from Kenny G

Lads,

quick update... Co-pilot Adam has done some strong recon and research into the PEPS stadium tailgating rules and alcohol... very positive response;

We have our answer about the tailgating. Here is what he put up on this discussion board.

also some pictures here:

For you PEPS regulars - what's the best place for pre-game "le tailgate"?

As well, for those of us in Ontario used to "les flics" giving out tickets for open alcohol, is it ok to hoist an pre-game beer (or two or three) in public before the game at Laval at the tailgate party?

Marton

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You'll feel like this is the place you've belonged all your life.

The tailgate is in the parking lot immediately adjacent to the stadium.

A few thousand should be there hours before the game.

And not only is it OK to drink beer, it's pretty much required.

There are cops, but they're not here to crack on alcohol but rather to prevent trouble. Not that I have ever seen any.

Hope you enjoy it!

Haven't heard of anyone ever getting arrested for drinking in public at the Laval tailgate. The two parking lots next to the stadium are reserved for the tailgate and alcohol consumption is allowed.

Heck you can take your beer right to the entrance of the stadium and throw it in the garbage just before the security check!

9 sleeps newsletter from Kenny G

oh yeeeaaaahhhhhhh,

1 -Don't forget your bathing suit as the Delta has the 4-season outdoor swimming pool

2- I haven't had any feedback on whether we are having a theme or competition. Also, still awaiting tailgating suggestions. We need to get thinking about this as this is serious bidniz but I am thinking sausages, burgers etc if we can score some of those portable tin foil BBQ's from Crappy Tire.

3 - Speaking of tailgating, Adam is looking into how many bags we are allowed on the train ... it is likely 2 so we can probably take lawn chairs and the tailgating gear. Hopefully disposable shit we can leave there. I might bring my little coolie-bag fold-up stool as it is pretty compact

4- Weather for V-Cup weekend is looking decent...way-long term focus is looking like 5 degrees and cloudy

5- Meals... do you guys want top go out for a decent dinner on both nights or just Friday night? I will look ingot decent restaurants

6- Adam had been kind enough to provide a photo of Stade PEPS...taken by Francis Vachon, heir to the Joe Louis fortune

National Semi-finals - Predictions

V-Line

Laval at Queen's - Mitchell Bowl
Queens' came up big last weekend with a thrilling victory over Western. (Loved the guy with the "Wuck Festern" shirt they showed at half time.) Laval steamrolled Montreal, avenging a loss from earlier in the regular season. This should be a great showcase of two excellent quarterbacks in Danny Brannagan (no relation to Laura) and Benoit Skidoo (or is it Groulx?). However, the superior Laval running game and defense will be the difference. This one won't be close - Dirty Don will sadly be denied the first Queen's return to the Vanier since 1992. Laval Rouge et Or 38 Queen's Golden Gaels 17.

Calgary at St. Mary's - Uteck Bowl
Calgary came up with a big come win with a touchdown with two minutes left to upset Sask at Griffiths Stadium. St. Mary's defeated St F-X at home to win the fairly weak AUS conference. Calgary has the advantage of playing tough opponents all year in the Canada West Conference and should win this one handily, making it two bowl road wins and setting up a Dinos - Rouge et Or Vanier Cup - Cowboys versus Quebecixans. Calgary Dinos 32 St Mary's Huskies 10

G-Spot

Laval 41-Queen's 10

St. Mary's 21 Calgary 17

Don's Dirt

Laval at Queen's - Mitchell Bowl
Nothing would make the trip to Vanier better than having the Gaels (or as Iand many of my alumni friends refer to them as Golden Gaels) playing forthe big prize! That said, I am worried about a combination of a let downfrom a HUGE win over their biggest rival and the fact that Laval is headand shoulder's above the rest of the CIS. Laval is just too strong. Thatbeing said, I am still going with my heart and praying for a Queen'svictory but the Queen's receivers need to avoid any dropped balls whichthey had on Saturday (are to believe that since they had 515 receivingyards). Go Gaels!!!!!
Queens (Golden) Gaels 36 - Laval Rouge et Or 33

Calgary at St. Mary's - Uteck Bowl
Haven't watched much of these teams this year, but I have to agree with Vin that the AUS is not a strong conference and St. Mary's is not the powerhouse they used to be when Queen's blanked them 31-ZIP (still a record forfewest points allowed in a National Championship - thanks for the singleSask in 2004) Calgary may also have a let down from a thrilling finishagainst Sask, but I think they will make the best of a long road trip eastand will expect to have another one the following week. Calgary Dinos 38St Mary's Huskies 13

10 sleeps update from Kenny G

Howdy Fellers,

only dix jours till Vanier (I am practicing my parlez vous le ding dong). Looking forward to an excellent romp in La Bell Province avec le ski-doo boot liners. It is likely time to think about if we want a theme or costume competition as per tradition... any suggestions.

From all reports, Tailgating is not only allowed but promoted. We should try and think about some logistics to prepare for that. Perhaps we can have a poutine table setup or Joe Louis station? Anyway, thought I would plant those seeds. Looking forward to feedback.

Cheers,

G Spot
